's formal education includes a B.S. in E.E. from Columbia and an M.E.E. from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He has held Professional Engineer licenses from New York, Maryland, and California (E-5897) and has been a Registered Patent Agent and a Certified Manufacturing Engineer (SME).
He is now an expert witness but previously he invented and designed mechanical and electro-mechanical devices of great diversity. These included robots, numerical controls, computer peripherals, space vehicles and components, simulators, a mail sorter memory, a heart-lung machine, automatic test-and-sort and other manufacturing equipment for semi-conductors and other products, transducers, switchgear, engine components, and the Decimal Keeper slide rule (now in the Smithsonian and Oxford Science Museums.) As a consultant he created new products and product improvements for many clients. He holds 38 patents.
EW #452 has published or presented seven books, 27 technical papers, a number of essays published on the Internet, many tutorials in Chipcenter magazine, and has produced much trade literature for his companies. He wrote a monthly column in Electronic Design magazine from February 2000 to June 2001. He has lectured at three universities and several companies.
Memberships include National Academy of Forensic Engineers, San Diego Forensic Consultants Association, Sigma Xi, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and, when he worked in those fields, to American Rocket Society (now the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, AIAA), Society of Manufacturing Engineers(SME), and Robot Institute.
He has worked as an employed engineer in both small and large companies, as an entrepreneur (Numerical Control Corp., Devonics, Inc., Typagraph Corp., Mobot Corp.), as a teacher and author in design theory and practice, and as a consulting engineer, inventor, and expert witness which are his present activities.
