An elected member of the Executive Board of the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers (ASLET) and a captain with the Los Angeles Police Department. He has 25 years of police service. He is also a police tactics consultant, author, trainer, and expert witness. He specializes in policy, training, equipment, tactics, supervision, and review processes. He was an expert witness for the defense during the Rodney King federal civil trial, and he was a consultant for the defense during the sentencing phase of the criminal trial. He has served as an expert witness on numerous other law enforcement and security cases. He was a consultant to the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission Round Table on Pepper Spray Policy and Training Standards. He is a member of the Advisory Board of Police magazine, and he is past chairman of the Los Angeles Police Historical Society. He is the recipient of Defensive Tactics Newsletter's Leadership Award for his research in the nonlethal weapons field, and he is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. Greg was the primary researcher for LAPD's nonlethal weapons pro gram, especially for the Taser device and chemical irritant sprays. He has certified hundreds of instructors on the Taser device, nationwide. He designed the prototype for LAPD's use of force report. Among his many published articles, he has written several articles for ASLETs Law Enforcement Trainer magazine, and two articles about the North Hollywood Bank Robbery Shoot-Out for Police magazine. He wrote the use-of-force chapter for a new textbook, Handbook of Criminal Justice Administration, published in 2000 by Marcel Dekker. He is a 1994 graduate of the California P.O.S.T. Management Course and a 1996 graduate of the LAPD/West Point Leadership and Command Program, and he currently serves on the instructional cadre for that program. Greg has accumulated more than 25 years of police experience in patrol, vice, detectives, traffic, tactical planning, and planning and research. He currently serves as the commanding officer of Valley Traffic Division, providing traffic safety education, enforcement, and collision investigation services to 1.5 million people in the 225-square-mile San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. In 1998 and 1999, he was the captain in charge of detectives, training, vice, gang enforcement, bicycle and "hype detail, crime analysis, and internal investigations at LAPDs North Hollywood field station. He earned his masters degree in public administration from California State University, Los Angeles (1991), where he published his thesis entitled, "Nonlethal Weapons vs. Conventional Police Tactics: The Los Angeles Police Department Experience" (reprints available; please click here).
