EW #611 is a chartered accountant. He was the secretary-general of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) from 1985 to 1994.
Prior to joining the IASC, he was a partner in Stoy Hayward & Co and chairman of that firm's international accounting and auditing committee. He has also worked for Société Générale, Black & Decker, Carlsberg and Pannell Kerr Forster (with whom he trained as a Chartered Accountant).
EW #611 is a senior visiting fellow at the London School of Economics and Political Science where he teaches a post-graduate course on international accounting.
He has written extensively on international financial reporting issues. As well as several surveys on international financial reporting, he is the author of Applying International Accounting Standards (Butterworths, 1999), the authoritative text on the application of IASs. He was joint author with Christopher Nobes of The Convergence Handbook (ICAEW, 2000), a comparison of IASs and UK GAAP commissioned by the UK Accounting Standards Board.
In June 1995, he was appointed an OBE in recognition of his services to the accountancy profession. He was awarded a plaque by the International Federation of Accountants in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the international accountancy profession.
