Southern Pacific Transportation Company:
During his 18 years with the company, he served in numerous operations positions. In his various capacities in the transportation and operating department of the Southern Pacific, he provided analytical and planning support for Vice-Presidents, General Managers, and Superintendents in the management of the railroad.

The Texas Mexican Railway:
He worked as a senior manager on the Texas Mexican Railway Company, a six hundred mile regional rail line in Texas. While working on the Tex-Mex, Allen was a key member of the management team that was responsible for the successes in safety and improving operating efficiencies. While with the Tex-Mex, the railroad improved their safety record and finished in first place for Class III railroads in the Harriman Safety Award for 1996. With continued emphasis on safety and training, they completed 1997 in third place in the Harriman Safety Awards for Class III railroads. Continued improvement and emphasis helped the railroad to finish in second place for Class III railroads in the Harriman Safety Award in 1998. Allen was a member of the team responsible for The Texas Mexican Railway being named the Regional Railroad of the Year for 1998.
