EMS - Emergency Medical Service

The Emergency Medical Service system (known by the acronym "EMS" in the USA and Canada) is responsible for providing pre-hospital (or out-of-hospital) care by paramedics, emergency medical technicians (EMT's), and medical first responders (MFRs in US terminology). The goal of EMS is to provide early treatment to those in need of urgent medical care, and ultimately rapid transportation to an Emergency department. ISO 9000 is an ISO standard for Quality Management Systems. ISO 9000 was developed from the British Standards Institution's BS 5750. The ISO 9000 standard is maintained by ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and administered by accreditation and certification bodies. It is widely used in manufacturing, although high costs and difficulties with implementation have led to many companies using alternatives such as IC9700, or IC9200, both of which are issued by the International Charter, or their own specific in-house 'standard'. Some countries re-label ISO 9000 as a national standard. (e.g. IR 9000 in Iran). It should be emphasised that ISO 9000 does not guarantee the quality of the end products - rather, it certifies that the correct manufacturing process is being carried out.

Water pollutants may consist of a wide range of organic and inorganic chemicals such as heavy metals, petrochemicals, chloroform, and bacteria. Water pollution may also occur in the form of thermal pollution and dissolved oxygen depletion. Soil contamination is an important aspect of environmental pollution; this phenomenon occurs when chemicals are released by spill or underground storage tank leakage. Among the most significant soil contaminants are hydrocarbons, heavy metals, MTBE, herbicides, pesticides and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The U.S., Russia, China and Japan are the world leaders in air pollution emissions; however, Canada is the number two country on a per capita basis.
