ENGINEERING - INSTRUMENTATION

Instrumentation Engineering is a discipline relying on connecting multiple disciplines of engineering.

Measurement and controls, the two facets of instrumentation, have brought technology to an unprecedented degree of precision. Instrumentation enables the measurement of various variables such as flow and pressure. Control works to keep these variables at a desired level of safe, economic and other constrained values. Instrument engineers usually have degrees in chemical engineering, electrical engineering, or mechanical engineering and sometimes in the newer field of control systems engineering.

FOOT / ANKLE

Orthopedics - The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments.

In anatomy, the ankle, or ancle (a word common, in various forms, to Teutonic languages, probably connected in origin with the Latin angulus, or Greek αγκυλος, bent), is the part of the lower limb that is located between the foot and the leg, and is actually comprised of two separate joints: the talocrural joint (or "true" ankle joint) and the subtalar joint.

HAND PROBLEMS

Orthopedics - The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

Doctors of internal medicine ("internists") focus on adult medicine and have had special study and training focusing on the prevention and treatment of adult diseases. At least three of their seven or more years of medical school and postgraduate training are dedicated to learning how to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases that affect adults. Internists are sometimes referred to as the "doctor's doctor," because they are often called upon to act as consultants to other physicians to help solve puzzling diagnostic problems. While the name "internal medicine" may lead one to believe that internists only treat "internal" problems, this is not the case. Doctors of internal medicine treat the whole person, not just internal organs.

JOINT PROBLEMS

A joint (articulation) is the location at which two bones make contact (articulate). Joints are constructed to both allow movement and provide mechanical support.

ORTHOTICS

Orthotics is the medical field concerned with the application and manufacture of orthoses, devices which support or correct the function of a limb or the torso. The term is derived from the Greek "ortho", to straighten. Sciences such as materials engineering, gait analysis, anatomy and physiology, and psychology contribute to the work done by orthotists, the professionals engaged in the field or orthotics. Individuals who benefit from an orthosis have sustained a physical impairment such as a stroke, spinal cord injury, or a congenital abnormality such as spina bifida or cerebral palsy.

PEDIATRIC - PEDIATRICIAN

Pediatrics (also spelled paediatrics or pædiatrics) is the branch of medicine that deals with the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents (from newborn to age 18 or 19).

PHYSICAL THERAPY

Physical therapy (also known as physiotherapy) is an allied health profession concerned with the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of disease and disability through physical means. It is based upon principles of medical science, and is generally held to be within the sphere of conventional (rather than alternative) medicine. Physiotherapy is practiced by physiotherapists (also known as physical therapists, e.g. in the United States), though aspects may also be practiced under supervised delegation by physiotherapy assistants or other health professionals.

SPINAL CORD INJURY

Spinal cord injury, or myelopathy, is a disturbance of the spinal cord that results in loss of sensation and mobility. The two common types of spinal cord injury are:

Trauma : automobile accidents, falls, gunshots, diving accidents, etc.

Disease : polio, spina bifida, tumors, Friedreichs ataxia, etc. It is important to note that the spinal cord does not have to be completely severed for there to be a loss of function. In fact, the spinal cord remains intact in most cases of spinal cord injury.

SURGERY - PEDIATRIC

Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Many pediatric surgeons practice at children's hospitals. Pediatric surgeons have completed a general surgery residency, then complete two more years of subspecialty fellowship training before they are eligible to take the board examination for official subspecialty certification. In the United States and Canada, approximately 35 surgeons complete training as pediatric surgeons each year. Pediatric surgery arose in the middle of the 20th century as the surgical care of birth defects required novel techniques and methods and became more commonly based at children's hospitals.

SURGERY - PODIATRIC - FOOT - FEET

Podiatric surgery is surgery performed by a "foot doctor". Unlike other specialists, a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) is a separate degree from that of a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.). M.D.s and D.O.s differ in their approach to patient care. In all states in the U.S. they both have the same rights and privileges, although this has not always been the case. All M.D.'s and all D.O.'s have the same basic education respectively. Some then obtain further education and clincal time to become a specialist. A podiatrist is not an M.D. or D.O. that has obtained specialization. In the U.S. podiatric medicine is regulated by each state. Podiatrists treat diseases, injuries and congenital problems of the foot, ankle and lower leg. Podiatrists are often paid less for the same surgery or treatment than an M.D. or D.O. Insurance companies say this is due to a lesser degree of education, but this is very often not the case.

SURGERY - RECONSTRUCTIVE

Reconstructive surgery is in its broadest sense the use of surgery to reconstruct damaged or malformed tissues or organs. Although plastic surgery is involved in some aspects of reconstructive surgery there are other branches of surgery whose main aim is reconstruction of a more normal part of the body. This contrasts with the main alternative type of surgery in which something is removed - for example an inflammed appendix.

SURGERY - TRAUMA

Trauma surgeons practice the last subspecialty of General Surgery to be created. Comfortable in operating on most body parts and cavities, trauma surgeons carry on the tradition of military surgeons. Trauma surgeons have a high success rate in the sickest of patients who have sustained life and limb-threatening injuries. Trauma surgeons have become specialists in Surgical Critical Care, burns and Emergency Surgery, while in the process creating the new specialty of Acute Care Surgery.
